DESIGN & OPERATING PRINCIPLE
The Beach-Russ Type RP Pump design features simplicity and high
performance efficiency. The pump has a minimum of moving parts :
The Rotor and its slide valve, which are always completely oil-sealed
in the pump cylinder. The rotor is set eccentrically in the cylinder
with the elliptical cylinder bore made to such close tolerances
that the end of the slide valve in the rotor maintains uniform minimum
clearance from the cylinder wall through its rotation. Thus as the
rotor turns, the slide valve acts as a piston, forcing all the air
or gas is drawn out of the cylinder through the discharge valves.
Simultaneously, a constant vacuum is created behind the slide valve
piston as new air or gas is drawn in through the manifold heads
and intake ports in the hollow slide valve.
The air space on the discharge side of the pump is steadily reduced,
forcing the air through the exhaust port into the double spring
loaded disc valves. These valves, submerged in oil, make it possible
for the pump to discharge against atmospheric pressure for a small
part of a revolution and prevent back leakage of air into the pump.
The air and oil mixture then passes into the baffled air-oil separator
where the oil drops into the reservoir to be re-used, while the
air is exhausted into atmosphere or piping.
This unique combination of the mechanical inlet slide valve and
automatic double exhaust valve, together with rotary pump design
and rocker oil seals on the slide valve, account for the un-usually
high vacuum and volumetric efficiency in this single stage pump.
